It’s not what you know, it’s who you know!

Networking is possibly one of the most valuable tools you can have when looking for work. Most of the time, jobs are found through personal connections, and while your resume may be the clincher for you getting the job, your network is your golden ticket to get your foot in the door.

You may not think it, but no matter who you are, your network is huge! Even if you think you don’t get out much. Once you know one person, you’re automatically connected to 5 more!

How you can use this knowledge:

Build connections

Your personal network will help you connect with people you had never thought of to help you get a job.

Be the first to know

Once you tap into it, your network can get you new job information before anyone else knows about it, putting you first in line.

Module 3: Cause and Effect

 0 Gallons of Fuel

Everything you do creates a consequence in your life. It’s how we view and react to those consequences that influence the type of life we live.

Life can be viewed in two ways:

The CAUSE of life

Where we get what we want.

The EFFECT of life

Where life just happens that way, it’s just the way it is.

Being at the cause of life is when you take responsibility for what you have and what is going on around you. It allows you to feel empowered and in control of your life. You make the decisions and you’re in control of what happens to you.

Being at the effect of life is playing the ‘blame game’. It’s when everything or everyone is against you or at least that’s what you think or feel like. If you allow the effect of life to happen to you, you believe that you can’t control the things that happen and that you don’t have a choice to do or have what you want.

If you can shift your thinking from the ‘effect of life’ to the ‘cause of life’ you’ll suddenly see new opportunities and possibilities. Your life could become something completely different!

How you can use this knowledge:

Take responsibility for what happens to you and how you react to it.

Vision and goals

When you are in control of your choices, you can work towards the things you really want.

Be open to more possibilities and opportunities.

Good decision making

Stop making excuses and being around people and situations where the ‘effect of life’ exists.

In this activity we are going to look at how you can go from being at the ‘effect of life’ to being at the ’cause of life’.

The ‘effect of life’ is when you blame others or situations for not getting the outcome you want. The ’cause of life’ is when you take responsibility for your part in an outcome. You can actively turn an unresourceful situation around by not shifting blame onto others.

Example of being at the ‘effect’ of life:

I rush at work and sometimes miss important details. I could have owned my mistakes instead of blaming it on how busy we were. I could have put in a strategy to slow down and be more present in my work, but I didn’t, and it seems to continually happen.

Example of being at the ’cause’ of life:

I forgot to put the trash out at the end of my shift. When questioned I apologized and agreed to set a timer on my phone to remind me to do it before I leave for the day. And I haven’t been in trouble for it again.

Module 3: Rapport

When you build rapport with an employer, your chances of getting and keeping a job are much higher.

Being in rapport means having conversations that flow, with relaxed body language and the ability to deliver a message or emotion effectively. You can build rapport by watching and listening to a person and reacting in the way you think they would prefer.

How you can use this knowledge:

Get more opportunities

Using communication styles and rapport will open up a new world of possibilities in the workplace.

Understand people better

Make stronger connections with people personally and professionally. Understand what drives them.

Know yourself better

Understand how you like to communicate. Learn to let others know what you need to be your best.

Reduce conflict

Understanding these things means you can deal with problems before they become too serious.

Test your rapport skills with this quiz!

Look at each example and select whether you think these two people are in rapport or out of rapport, then explain why you chose that answer.
